About
Anna Kashfi is also the name of a band from
Manchester who play dreamy, melancholic music that crackles with
the memories of past mistakes, missed opportunities and the
emotional games played by lovers in battle. ‘Procurement'
is a stunning album that moves from stately ballads
through late-night laments to droning psychedelic folk that is
eerie and gentle in equal measure. This is the point at which
traditional English folk, modern Americana and klezmer traditions
come together to create a sound that is familiar and comforting
yet opaque and elusive.
AMERICANA UK
“10/10. Stunning second album from Manchester’s darkest purveyors
of country-noir. 10/10 is a controversial mark but, simply put, it
couldn’t be any better. Beautifully arranged and unsettlingly
moving, ‘Procurement’ is one of the great records of 2008.”
MARK RADCLIFFE (BBC Radio 2)
“‘Procurement’ is a really lovely album.”
CHANNEL 4 PLANET SOUND
“The Mancunian outfit manage to portray a melancholia that's
utterly charming. Sian Webley's voice is soft like a dreamy Joni
Mitchell, and her slow ballad style is comforting and eerie in
equal measures. A haunting record that should surely bring Anna
Kashfi out of the late-night shadows. 8/10.”
ROCK N REEL
“The brave cover of Nick Cave's 'The Mercy Seat' is simple and
devastating, a masterful performance making you hear a fine but
perhaps over-familiar song with new ears.”
DELUSIONS OF ADEQUACY
“Astonishing ambition.”
PENNYBLACKMUSIC.COM
“There are few better bands on the current British alt. country
circuit at the moment than Anna Kashfi and certainly none as
under-rated. With its depiction of small scale tragedies and
dramas, and in its aching laments, sore truths and naked
confessions, ‘Procurement’ is a wonderful testimony to a group of
extraordinary vision.”
